Gert Biesta is Professor of Public Education at the Centre for Public Education and Pedagogy, Maynooth University, Ireland, and Professorial Fellow in Educational Theory and Pedagogy at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh, UK. PROFESSOR GERT BIESTA (Brunel University, London and ArtEZ Institute of Arts, Netherlands) works in the areas of educational theory and philosophy, engaging with questions that promote discussion of education’s purpose and its role in promoting much more than a restricted notion of learning. Gert Biesta is Professor of Public Education at the Centre for Public Education and Pedagogy of Maynooth University Ireland and Professor for Education at the University of Humanistic Studies in the Netherlands. His work focuses on the theory of education, with a specific interest in questions of democracy and democratisation. In this chapter, Gert Biesta discusses his approach to the study of education and educational research. Biesta är världens mest inflytelserika utbildningsfilosof. Enligt honom är utbildningsväsendets främsta uppgift att göra det möjligt för eleven att bli ett självständigt, fritt subjekt som kan möta omvärlden på ett vuxet sätt. I co-edit two book series with Routledge: Theorizing Education (with Stefano Oliverio), and New Directions in the Philosophy of Education (with Michael A. Peters and Liz Jackson). I have a PhD from Leiden University the Netherlands (1992), a degree in education from Leiden University (1987) and a degree in Philosophy from Erasmus University Rotterdam (1989).
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?The point of education is not that children/students learn, but that they learn something, that they learn this for a reason, and that the Gert Biesta is Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy (part-time) and Deputy Head of the Institute of Education, Teaching and Leadership.
